On February 18th and 20th, 2026, I had the pleasure of guiding a guest from Singapore, Mr. Richard, on an unforgettable journey through some of South Sulawesi’s most breathtaking natural and historical landscapes. The trip combined adventure, culture, and scenic beauty, offering a rich experience that highlighted the uniqueness of the Maros-Pangkep karst region. From the serene waterways of Rammang-Rammang to the prehistoric caves of Leang-Leang and the refreshing landscapes of Bislab, this short tour left a lasting impression on both of us.
Day 1: Exploring Rammang-Rammang by Kart (February 18th, 2026)
Our journey began in the afternoon, as we kicked off a half-day tour in Rammang-Rammang from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Rammang-Rammang is known as one of the largest karst landscapes in the world, and it never fails to impress visitors with its towering limestone formations, lush greenery, and peaceful river systems.
Mr. Richard arrived with great enthusiasm, eager to explore something different from the typical urban attractions he was used to in Singapore. After a brief introduction and safety briefing, we began the adventure using a kart—an increasingly popular and fun way to explore the area more actively.
As we drove through the village paths, Mr. Richard was immediately captivated by the scenery. The dramatic karst cliffs rising on both sides created a surreal atmosphere, almost like stepping into another world. The route took us through traditional Bugis-Makassar villages, where locals greeted us warmly. This added a cultural dimension to the trip, allowing Mr. Richard to witness daily life in rural South Sulawesi.
We made several stops along the way. One of the highlights was a viewpoint overlooking the karst formations, where we paused to take photos and simply admire the natural beauty. The combination of green rice fields, winding rivers, and towering rock formations created a landscape that felt both peaceful and majestic.
Another memorable moment was when we visited the river area. Although we didn’t take a boat this time, the calm waters reflected the karst cliffs beautifully, creating a mirror-like effect that fascinated Mr. Richard. He mentioned how different it felt compared to Singapore’s highly developed environment—this was raw, untouched nature at its finest.
The kart tour itself was smooth and enjoyable. Riding through narrow paths and open landscapes added a sense of adventure without being too physically demanding. It was the perfect balance between relaxation and exploration, especially for a half-day itinerary.
As the afternoon turned into early evening, the lighting became softer, enhancing the beauty of the surroundings. By the time we wrapped up the tour at around 6:00 PM, Mr. Richard expressed how impressed he was with Rammang-Rammang. He described it as a “hidden gem” and said it was one of the most unique landscapes he had ever seen.
Day 2: Discovering History and Nature in Leang-Leang and Bislab (February 20th, 2026)
Two days later, on February 20th, we continued the journey with a visit to Leang-Leang and Bislab. This part of the tour focused more on history, archaeology, and natural relaxation.
Our first stop was Leang-Leang, a prehistoric archaeological site famous for its ancient cave paintings. As we approached the area, Mr. Richard was curious about the historical significance of the site. I explained that the caves contain some of the oldest known hand stencils and animal drawings in the world, dating back tens of thousands of years.
We hiked a short distance to reach the caves. The path was surrounded by karst hills and greenery, making the walk enjoyable and not too strenuous. Once inside the cave area, Mr. Richard was fascinated by the ancient handprints on the rock walls. Seeing these markings firsthand created a powerful connection to the past—it’s incredible to think that humans had already been expressing themselves artistically in this region so long ago.
He spent quite some time observing the details and asking questions about how the paintings were made and preserved. This part of the tour provided a deeper understanding of South Sulawesi’s historical importance, beyond just its natural beauty.
After exploring Leang-Leang, we continued to Bislab, a lesser-known but equally charming destination. Bislab offers a refreshing natural setting, with clear water, lush vegetation, and a peaceful atmosphere. It was the perfect contrast to the historical exploration earlier in the day.
At Bislab, we took time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Mr. Richard appreciated the calmness of the place, noting how it felt far removed from the busy pace of city life. The sound of flowing water and the fresh air created a soothing environment, allowing us to unwind after the more active parts of the tour.
Reflections on the Experience
Guiding Mr. Richard over these two days was a rewarding experience. His curiosity, appreciation for nature, and interest in local culture made the journey even more enjoyable. It’s always fulfilling to see a guest genuinely connect with the places they visit.
This tour also highlighted how diverse the Maros region is. Within just a short distance, visitors can experience dramatic karst landscapes, traditional village life, prehistoric history, and tranquil natural spots. It’s an ideal destination for those looking to explore something authentic and less commercialized.
The half-day kart tour in Rammang-Rammang proved to be a great option for travelers with limited time. Starting at noon and ending in the early evening, it offers a compact yet rich experience that combines adventure and sightseeing. Meanwhile, the follow-up visit to Leang-Leang and Bislab adds depth to the journey, making it both educational and relaxing.
This trip with Mr. Richard from Singapore was a perfect example of how meaningful travel experiences don’t always require long durations. With just a few well-planned days, it’s possible to create lasting memories through a mix of nature, culture, and history.
Rammang-Rammang, Leang-Leang, and Bislab each offer something unique, and together they form a well-rounded itinerary that showcases the best of South Sulawesi. Whether it’s driving through karst landscapes, discovering ancient cave art, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature, this journey is one that leaves a lasting impression.
For anyone seeking a distinctive and enriching travel experience, this route is highly recommended.
